Jamii Bora Trust Staff Member Profiled in MF Insights

Gabriel Kadidi, currently the Senior Information Officer at Jamii Bora Trust(a Unitus partner since 2004), was recently featured in the Jan-Feb 2009 publication of MF Insights. Kadidi shared insights from his radio show “Step 2 Step Moments with Kadidi” on 99.9 Pamoja FM, which airs in Kibera, the largest slum in sub-Saharan Africa.

As Kadidi explains in the interview, “The show is intended to uplift and give people hope. It is my dream to get people out of poverty by sharing the stories of members of Jamii Bora who have actually made it through the provision of small loans to prove to others that microfinance is the way forward to fight poverty.”

“The role of media in microfinance is very important. I used my show to give hope and inform listeners about Jamii Bora products. The membership in that branch shot up from 6,000 members to 50,000 members [in less than a year]!”

“My show has been a big success, and it has been proven from the feedback I have received since I have started. Close to two million people listen to the show. I was touched (by how) my show has actually had an effect on the youth in Kibera. They have transformed from committing crimes and doing drugs, and joined Jamii Bora. They have formed groups and have started doing business.”

“Since I am a journalist by profession, my dream is to start our own national Jamii Bora FM radio station” says Kadidi.
